Therapy Volunteer Projects
Each project has its own focus with some needing the support of a range of experience therapists while others specialising in one area, such as occupational health. Activities very much depend on the need of the patients and are based in clinics, community centres and patients homes. Activities that you may get involved with include hands on treatment, discussing patient histories and problems through to demonstrating new approaches to local staff. You will find your placement extremely fulfilling as you support local staff with their efforts to assist members of the community who struggle to access essential therapies and services, and build the capacity of local staff through sharing new techniques and approaches from home.
Millions of people around the world suffer with disabilities and injuries that if left untreated through appropriate therapy can have a detrimental impact on the quality of patients lives. Often people with disabilities are housebound meaning they are unable to participate in community activities or find employment. Access to staff trained in a range of therapies or centres where they can receive treatment can be limited and so home based care and outreach services are essential. By volunteering on a therapy project with Kaya or joining us as an intern you will work with the most vulnerable in the community and help local teams to improve the quality of lives.
Projects that are a good match for volunteers with therapy experience include Counselling and Social Work in Belize and our Equine Therapy placement in South Africa. Many of our placements will welcome qualified or experienced volunteers so please speak to a Kaya advisor if another project or destination is of interest to you.
Experience of working with children or adults with disabilities or injuries is required for you to participate in our therapy projects. If you have experience or are studying speech therapy, occupational health, physiotherapy, sports therapy or kinesiology these projects will be of interest to you. You should come with a positive attitude, be able to work well with others and be happy to work in a range of settings. You will be working with vulnerable people so you must be able to lend a sympathetic ear.
Bring your skills and experience of working with people with disabilities and injuries and have an incredibly rewarding experience volunteering with staff and communities where access to a range of therapies is in demand.
