What is the Early Childhood Development Internship In Africa all about?

If you are studying early childhood development or early years education or are an experienced practitioner join us in South Africa or Swaziland on this internship and, learn from and compare your experiences in your own country  with local teachers and students.  Early years education is important in preparing children for attending primary school and often those from impoverished backgrounds lack the opportunity to attend.  Many of the children come from vulnerable backgrounds and have been abandoned or orphaned due to HIV, drug abuse and poor family circumstances. The projects in both destinations work with local pre-schools set up these children a better start in life through preparing them for school, providing a place to stay while their guardians and parents try to find work and a nutritious meal.

The pre-schools are at different stages of development.  All are offering a safe place to go and are run by well-meaning women from the local communities.  With a curriculum now in place support is needed for these teachers to apply it effectively, assess the children and to develop the teacher’s competence.  Support is needed with this process.  Intern in South Africa or Swaziland and see how education of the vulnerable is delivered, appreciate amazing and colourful African cultures and extend your knowledge as an early years development professional.

Role of the Teaching Intern

The Internship

During your internship you will work with local qualified educators to help to provide an inspiring environment and curriculum for young vulnerable children both in and outside of a classroom setting. You may be involved in the following activities:

• Develop the curriculum and help with lesson planning and delivery
• Train local teachers and support staff in areas you are familiar with or new approaches
• Share ideas and approaches to evaluating student learning both in and outside of the classroom, including focus on rights of the child
• Design and implement approaches to develop child self esteem and age appropriate life skills

Potential study related learning outcomes from this internship include:

• Researching, designing and running training sessions for teachers and support staff
• Development of lessons in a local cultural setting, in line with the local curriculum
• How to write best practice guidelines for lesson planning, teaching and curriculum development
• Working in resource stretched environments

Weekly reviews will be held to answer any questions and to review your progress and at the end of your placement you will be asked to present your experience to the local team. It is a fantastic opportunity to use apply and develop your skills and knowledge.

What skills do I need to be a Teaching Intern in Africa?

Interns should have some experience in early childhood development or education either as a student or as a practitioner.  You will be working at a more strategic level helping to develop the curriculum and local staff so you should have completed at least 1 year of study or have practical experience of working in the field.  You will be supported during your placement by a dedicated mentor and will have the opportunity and be expected to use your own initiative.  Bring a positive attitude, love of children, and team working skills to make the most out of this placement.
