Join this Lion and Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteering Project and work at the forefront of conservation initiatives and wildlife care in and around Victoria Falls. You will work with a local team, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured animals, as well as providing a safe and permanent home for wildlife that cannot survive in the wild.

You will engage in activities that aim to not only create a healthy, diverse ecosystem within a private game reserve, but also raise awareness of conservation issues within the community and local schools.

Working with wildlife means that no two days are the same. One day you could be involved in anti-poaching efforts or data collection, the next day you might be monitoring the movement of local species, or working on behaviour enrichment activities for the resident lions.

This project is ideal for someone who is adventurous, flexible and passionate about wildlife conservation and securing the future of the African lion.

Role of the Wildlife Sanctuary volunteer

As a lion and wildlife sanctuary volunteer, you will take part in a number of important activities, such as:

• Working with qualified rangers to help provide behaviour enrichment activities to the lions, to encourage natural behaviour and keep them alert whilst in their enclosures. In addition to this, you will assist with enclosure cleaning, maintenance and feeding duties.
• Camera trapping and tracking animal sightings to monitor the presence and movement of species within the reserve. 
• Maintaining the national park through waterhole development, snare sweeps to remove wires set by poachers, boundary patrol, invasive plant removal.
• Assisting with outreach initiatives; delivering conservation education lessons in local schools to help reduce conflict between humans and wildlife.

Skills Required to be a Wildlife Research and Conservation volunteer

There are no specific skills required for this program. You should have a passion for wildlife, be reasonably fit and be prepared to get up early! Good communication skills and adaptability are also important.
