- NGO & Community Development in Siem Reap
What is the NGO & Community Development in Siem Reap project all about?
There are numerous, wonderful NGO and Community Development projects looking for the support of international volunteers in Siem Reap. Many NGOs are set up by people with admirable ideas or motivations. These leaders are in tune with the needs and issues facing the Siem Reap province, but they lack some of the necessary skills to make their organizations a success. These placements require the assistance of volunteers with skills in a wide variety of areas, as they will be helping to put in place an infrastructure to run well-structured projects, liaise with donors, and to market themselves effectively. Your help will make these small projects more effective, so that the communities can benefit from their invaluable endeavours. As each NGO/project has different needs, all placements will be set up and tailored to your skills and experience.
Why choose this NGO and Community Development project?
The Siem Reap NGOs that we work with are very small and don’t have the funds to invest in the skilled workers that they need to run their projects effectively. International volunteers will help with a range of activities, such as running training and development sessions. Volunteers’ involvement helps the local staff to put in place initiatives that can be continued even after you have left.
Role of the Business & Community Volunteer
Your role as a volunteer will depend on your skills and experience. We aim to individually tailor volunteers to projects that will best benefit their specific skill sets. For the vast majority of projects, your role will involve observing the local team, then making suggestions and setting up schemes to improve their current work strategies. While working to train the local staff, you may be asked to write procedures, manuals or policies and put in place financial control, marketing and/or HR strategies. You may also be asked to work on newsletters or fundraising initiatives.
What skills do I need to be a Business & Community Volunteer in Siem Reap, Cambodia?
This project is looking for individuals who have skills and knowledge that they are willing and able to pass on to the organisation and its staff. The following skills would be well utilised for these placements: IT/computer programming, web design, marketing, social media, accounting, international development, human rights, women’s rights, environmental education, grant writing, fundraising, art and photography. To ensure appropriate placements, we like to conduct telephone interviews with volunteers to establish their skills and their goals for this volunteer opportunity.
To participate, you will need to send your CV/resume, a letter of motivation, medical certificate and 2 references from a former teacher or employer.

Where will I work in Cambodia?
About the Location
Siem Reap is where all our volunteer projects are based. The city is close by to the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple, making Siem Reap Cambodia’s most visited town. Referring back to the centuries old conflict between the Khmer and Siamese, “Siem Reap” translates as “Siem Defeated”. Khmer people, who are native to Cambodia, are very approachable and love to celebrate many occasions throughout the year, whether it is life, death or marriage. It is quite common to be invited to events where there will be loud music playing throughout the day and night.
Accommodation
During your volunteering adventure with Kaya, you will be staying in a local guesthouse in Siem Reap. Here, you will have access to a standard room (all to yourself) which has a fan and an ensuite bathroom. Having said this, If you would like to share a room with a friend or a family member then please do not hesitate to ask us! Besides a bedroom, you will also have access to large dining room. You will be able to connect to WIFI here so you can use your laptop or iPad should you choose to bring them with you. During the summer months, it might be a fun idea to go for a swim in the pool at a nearby guesthouse. There is a small fee to pay, but it would be a great way to have fun and relax in your free time.
What to do in your Spare Time
Siem Reap is a major tourist destination where millions flock from around the world to take in the wonderful views present at Angkor Wat. As a Kaya volunteer, you will have plenty of chances to visit this complex, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the volunteer guesthouse is located approximately 5km away.
Despite the many tourists, it’s still easy to get a feel for everyday life in Siem Reap. Use your bicycle to explore back streets. Visit the Khmer Beer Gardens with friends or relax at the city’s museums and butterfly farm. On your days off, why not head to a barrai (lake) and hang out with the locals? Siem Reap is located about three hours from Battambong where you can explore caves or take the unique bamboo train.
You can find a great bargain at one of the many markets in Siem Reap that sell a variety of items such as trinkets, t-shirts, or paintings! We would remind you to look for the best price and haggle with the locals, but remember to pay a fair price for the items you are buying.
Kulen Mountain National Park is another destination not to be missed. Spend the day swimming in the pool by the beautiful waterfall with your friends and take a picnic with you to enjoy throughout the day. If you are interested in observing the Thousand Linga that represent the Hindu diety Shiva, then Kulen National Park is the place to go. You can also visit Preah Ang Thom pagoda where you will be able to see the giant reclining Buddha. Whatever your pleasure, Siem Reap has plenty to offer and you will never be short of something new to experience!
