The psychology and social work internship in Ecuador work with one of two local NGOs that focus on support for children with autism or language disabilities in Quito. Make a real difference and participate in a wide range of areas including diagnosis, psycho-pedagogical support, multi-sensory classrooms, music therapy, social skills, cognitive skills, language skills, and workshops for parents. As an intern, you will contribute to specific and individual support programs and specialized therapies that stimulate the development of skills.
Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability, and during your psychology and social work internship, you will contribute to the educational intervention methods which best meet the needs of the child and family.

Role of the Psychology and Social Work Intern
During your Psychology and Social Work internship in Ecuador, you will have the opportunity to assist Ecuadorian professionals to integrate professional therapeutic models and family counseling. You will work alongside educational centers, as well as state, municipal and private institutions as you ultimately provide and promote the comprehensive health of vulnerable children and their families through a multidisciplinary approach.
Depending on your skill set and the needs of the project at the time, you may be involved in a variety of rehabilitation programs, including Language Therapy, Child Psychology, Psycho-pedagogy and Physical Therapy. As an important member of the team, you can help improve the children’s quality of life, social inclusion, learning and development.
What skills do I need to be a Psychology and Social Work intern in Ecuador?
In order to participate in this psychology and social work internship in Ecuador, you will be asked to provide your resume and attend a short interview. Any experience with autism and language disorders is highly regarded but not essential. This placement is particularly suited to social work, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy and psychopedagogy students. Please arrive with empathy, humility, dedication, flexibility and patience. A B1 level of Spanish is also required to communicate effectively throughout your internship.

About the Location
Your psychology and social work internship in Ecuador will be located in Quito, the capital city of the country. Quito is a renowned world heritage site and sits high in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m. Built on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, Quito is known for its well-preserved colonial center. Indeed, the center is packed with colonial monuments and architectural treasures. With the spectacular mountains and volcanoes surrounding the city, you will be sure to get your breath taken away by amazing landscapes from every angle.
Accommodation
During your time in Quito as an intern, you will live with a local Ecuadorian family in a homestay within a traditional Quito neighborhood. You will use public transport to travel to your placement each day.
What to do in your spare time
Quito is a very lively city and has something on offer for everyone. From riding the Teléferico, South America’s highest gondola; to jumping between two hemispheres at the Middle of the World Monument, you will be sure to bring home plenty of memories. In between, you can spend your downtime exploring Quito’s thriving culinary scene and wandering through the UNESCO-listed Old Town. Day trips from Quito include Otavalo Market, a sprawling indigenous market selling artisan treasures; Cotopaxi National Park, reigned over by the ash-capped Cotopaxi Volcano; Quilotoa Crater Lake; and Mindo cloud forest.
