- School for Deaf Children Volunteering in The Philippines
What is the School for Deaf Children Volunteer Project in The Philippines all about?
Bring your sign language skills and volunteer at a school for deaf children in the Philippines. You will work with the children and teachers helping to improve class interaction and learning. Approximately 150 Filipinos are born daily with hearing loss and a staggering 27,000 profoundly and bilaterally deaf each year. As is common in many societies people with hearing difficulties lack the support they need to help them to lead productive and interactive lives.
This project works at a government school, supporting children with hearing impairments and special need from kindergarten to grade 6. The number of children you will work with varies because due to a lack of teachers classes are often combined. These children will have a range of capabilities and needs and therefore the project works to assist the teachers. Signing in lessons as well as running awareness sessions and training where needed are how the project helps. Bring your skills and expertise to the Philippines and help improve access to education for deaf children.
Why choose this Volunteer programme At A School for Deaf Children?
Your help as a volunteer is needed to support specialised roles needed by the social and welfare department. This is because foreign volunteers often have better training and skills, and more up to date knowledge of the subject area. These are assets that are not readily available in this part of the world. As a specialised volunteer you are a rare and much needed resource to improve the organisation, teach the department staff, and help shape and modernise current projects. Develop your sign language skills in a setting different from your own. Empower disadvantaged people, and gain valuable personal and professional experience by joining this rewarding volunteer placement.
Role of the volunteer teacher
You will be assigned to a government school where you will use your specialised skills in working with the deaf. Tasks you will help with include assisting teaching staff and to helping to interpret ordinary lessons into sign language . You may also chose to organise activities based on your speciality at the community centre near to your home-stay. You can even offer after school tutorials to some of the other deaf high school children in the community.
What skills do I need to be a Deaf Volunteer teacher in the Philippines?
To volunteer on this project you must be studying or have some prior experience of international sign language. Your placement while rewarding, will not be easy, and the confidence and resolve to work at times without supervision is required. If you are also experienced in working with the visually impaired, and autistic children you will be a real asset. Equally important, you must love working with children and have unlimited amount of patience. Please send your CV and note that you will be asked to attend a Skype interview for this project.

Where will I work in the Philippines?
About the Location
Your placement is located on the island of Leyte, about an hour by air southeast of Manila. You will work for the city social welfare department of the Leyte capital city, Tacloban, which has modern amenities. You will live in Tacloban with a family in a homestay within a barangay, surrounded by friendly locals and immersed in community activities. Tacloban is a historic World War II site, the beachfront city where the American General Douglas MacArthur liberated the Philippines in 1944 from Japan. It has a population of over 300,000 and the local dialect is called Waray-Waray, though English is widely spoken. Tacloban City was destroyed during Typhoon Haiyan and due to local and international aid efforts is making a recovery. Take some time to explore more that the Philippines or Southeast Asia has to offer after your placement.
Accommodation
You will be staying on the outskirts of Tacloban City in the Philippines for the duration of your trip with a homestay family. These families are accustomed to receiving volunteers all year round and they do their best to make your stay as comfortable as possible. All volunteers are within a short walking distance from each other, which makes it easy to meet up after your projects. You and other volunteers could take a short walk down to the community centre, which is also used as a home base for volunteers, to spend time with the local community and take part in various activities.
What to do in your spare time
You will still be able to explore The Philippines for yourself whilst volunteering with Kaya Responsible Travel. For example, during the weekend, you and other volunteers could group together and embark on a 2-3 day trip to visit the spectacular islands of Malapascua and Bohol. This would be a perfect opportunity for you to make some great friends during you time in The Philippines.
Those of you who consider yourself to be the sporty type could even join a gym whilst you’re volunteering to keep yourself in shape, not to mention that the gym in the astrodome has hot showers too! You could even go downtown to have a game of badminton in a court or use the climbing walls to see how high you can climb. Alternatively, you can stay in your local community and take part in a few friendly basketball games. You should definitely visit the town of Guiuan if you’re a surfer since it is home to some of The Philippines best surfing destinations.
However, if you want to stay nearer to your homestay, then you could take a trip down to Tanuan Beach and Tadjow Beach and spend the day relaxing. The Philippines possesses some of the most spectacular white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters, so why not check them out for yourself?
