What is the School for Deaf Children Volunteer Project in The Philippines all about?

Bring your sign language skills and volunteer at a school for deaf children in the Philippines.  You will work with the children and teachers helping to improve class interaction and learning.  Approximately 150 Filipinos are born daily with hearing loss and a staggering 27,000 profoundly and bilaterally deaf each year.  As is common in many societies people with hearing difficulties lack the support they need to help them to lead productive and interactive lives.

This project works at a government school, supporting children with hearing impairments and special need from kindergarten to grade 6.  The number of children you will work with varies because due to a lack of teachers classes are often combined.  These children will have a range of capabilities and needs and therefore the project works to assist the teachers.   Signing in lessons as well as running awareness sessions and training where needed are how the project helps.  Bring your skills and expertise to the Philippines and help improve access to education for deaf children.

Role of the volunteer teacher

You will be assigned to a government school where you will use your specialised skills in working with the deaf.  Tasks you will help with include assisting teaching staff and to helping to interpret ordinary lessons into sign language .  You may also chose to organise activities based on your speciality at the community centre near to your home-stay.  You can even offer after school tutorials to some of the other deaf high school children in the community. 

What skills do I need to be a Deaf Volunteer teacher in the Philippines?

To volunteer on this project you must be studying or have some prior experience of international sign language.  Your placement while rewarding, will not be easy, and the confidence and resolve to work at times without supervision is required.  If you are also experienced in working with the visually impaired, and autistic children you will be a real asset.   Equally important, you must love working with children and have unlimited amount of patience.  Please send your CV and note that you will be asked to attend a Skype interview for this project.
