Although I initially had my doubts about completing a remote internship, I have been pleasantly surprised with how well the experience has gone so far. It took some time to adjust to working with different time zones and communicating digitally, but I am greatly enjoying the experience so far, and am looking forward to completing my projects while learning more about South Africa’s culture.
A virtual internship is an experience every student should endure, especially since the professional atmosphere is forever changed due to COVID-19. My virtual internship has allowed me to really hone in on my communication skills, to become more independent professionally and to trust my capabilities. Although everything is virtual and remote, you can still gain the experience you’re seeking as well as create strong connections with the professionals you’re working with. You will get out of it what you put into it. I definitely recommend doing a virtual internship if you have the chance to!

I love my non-profit organization that I am working with! My ultimate goal is to be a practicing physician, and this has been a perfect mix of observing/learning about clinical care while also learning much more about public health education!
This programme fits me wonderfully; I am doing work that pertains to where I want to go in the future, and while it is sometimes hard to see the impact of what I am doing, I have been able to observe specifically how things are going to benefit the girls involved in the programmes.
Make sure you actually want to get to know your country’s culture and the people you are working with! If you come into it only looking for work experience and forget that it takes engaging with people, it would be really hard to get anything out of it. Wanting to get to know Morocco and the organization I am with has made this a super enjoyable experience so far!
I am really happy with my placement. I am doing a lot of hard work and am finding connections to my own career path and future goals. Be prepared for challenges but don’t be scared away from them. I think doing things virtually means one has to be much more intentional about meeting people and asking questions so that you get the most out of the experience.
The in-country directors do a wonderful job trying to immerse you into the country.
The relationships I’ve built with the local team and local buddies are phenomenal and I hope I can meet them in person someday. They’ve already taught me so much about Vietnamese culture and have really made it a point to get to know me. We speak every day and they always show so much love and support.
My experience working as an intern has been phenomenal, and I never realized how great of a learning opportunity it would provide. Despite not being able to go to South Africa, the internship has helped to provide all the same benefits and cultural learning. Additionally, despite the scarcity of internships for the summer, Kaya Responsible Travel made it quick and easy to have a meaningful and fulfilling summer experience, providing more than I would have ever been able to figure out on my own, and placing me into a top-notch internship. I have always wanted to travel and have a cultural immersion experience, however, Kaya Responsible Travel has made it possible to do from the comfort of my home, and I recommend the opportunity to all who even have the slightest bit of interest in it.
I am currently participating in a remote internship and working on putting together a sports program design for a group of underprivileged girls based in South Africa! Although I would have liked to visit Cape Town in person, I have still been able to meet some incredible people and truly experience the South African culture within the comfort of my own home. I feel I am making a difference in these girls lives whilst they are changing mine. I have been participating in fun cultural workshops and weekly buddy chats with my new friend in South Africa as well! This experience has helped me gain perspective, think creatively, and explore my interests. I have had a great experience with Kaya from the very beginning on my program and I would definitely recommend this internship!
It is an interesting NGO and for those who like international development and political topics, there is a lot to learn from the local organization. In the end, I feel I made a positive contribution towards the organization’s goals.
